ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
UNICEF operates across more than 190 countries and territories, working tirelessly to save children's lives, protect their rights, and unlock their potential. We are seeking a Media Consultant to join our Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships Section and play a vital role in amplifying UNICEF's mission in Kenya.
This is a 12-month consultancy position ideal for an experienced communications professional ready to make a direct impact on children's rights advocacy through strategic media partnerships and compelling storytelling.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Your primary responsibility is to build and strengthen relationships with leading journalists, editors, and media houses operating at national and international levels in Kenya. You will secure high-impact media coverage for UNICEF's programmes and advocacy priorities centered on children's issues.
Beyond coverage generation, you will ensure strategic visibility for key donors and campaigns while driving public advocacy on UNICEF Kenya's identified priorities. You will also support media engagement strategy leading up to the 2027 national elections and coordinate reporting on programme results and achievements throughout 2026 and 2027.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Education and Experience
You hold a Master's degree in Journalism, Mass Media, Communications, Development Studies, or a closely related field. You bring a minimum of eight years of professional experience in communication across print, broadcast, and digital media platforms, with demonstrated expertise covering children's issues for child rights organizations such as UNICEF.
Core Skills and Competencies
You are an accomplished writer with proven ability to craft press releases, articles, and stories for traditional and electronic media outlets. You excel at developing media communication strategies and possess strong research and analytical capabilities. Your network of media contacts is extensive and current, underpinned by solid knowledge of communication theories, research practices, and the role of mass media in advocacy.
You demonstrate exceptional ability to work collaboratively within diverse teams and bring a comprehensive understanding of UNICEF's programmes and mandate. You navigate multicultural environments with ease, building harmonious and productive relationships both internally and with external stakeholders.
Language Requirements
Fluency in English and Kiswahili is essential, with demonstrated proficiency in both written and spoken communication.
