SENIOR CLIMATE FINANCE OFFICER (HOME-BASED RETAINER) - NAIROBI, KENYA About This Role Sokify is excited to present a unique opportunity to work as a Senior Climate Finance Officer on a home-based retainer basis with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). This is a specialized position supporting Kenya's climate finance agenda at the national level. You will operate from government facilities using your own laptop and software, offering flexibility while driving impactful climate finance initiatives across the country. Position Details Duration: 12 months with a maximum of 220 working days. Extension is possible based on your performance and fund availability. What You'll Do Your responsibilities span three core areas: Policy and Strategy Development You will help shape and refine policy, legislative, and strategic frameworks focused on climate and green finance. You will align Kenya's national development priorities with international climate finance opportunities and produce impactful policy briefs and analytical reports. Your work will integrate climate finance into Medium Term Plans, sectoral strategies, budgets, and investment frameworks. Additionally, you will advise on innovative financing solutions such as green bonds, blended finance, debt-for-nature swaps, and carbon markets. Project Development and Resource Mobilization You will support the National Treasury in its role as the National Designated Authority for the Green Climate Fund and as the focal point for the Climate Investment Funds. You will help government ministries, agencies, and counties develop competitive adaptation and mitigation projects ready for submission to major climate funds including the Green Climate Fund, Adaptation Fund, Global Environment Facility, and Climate Investment Funds. You will mentor stakeholders on project design, financial structuring, and donor relations. You will identify emerging climate finance opportunities, facilitate partnerships with development partners and the private sector, and support the National Treasury's accreditation as a Direct Access Entity with the Green Climate Fund. Capacity Building and Knowledge Management You will assess stakeholder capacity gaps, design targeted enhancement strategies, and deliver training on climate finance access, management, and reporting to government staff and key stakeholders. What We're Looking For Essential Qualifications You hold either a Master's degree in economics, environmental sciences, sustainable development finance, environmental economics, climate finance, international relations, or a closely related field; or a Bachelor's degree coupled with four years of professional experience in relevant fields. Required Experience You bring a minimum of two years of general professional experience in environment, green growth, climate change, or climate finance. Critically, you have at least two years of specific, demonstrable experience accessing and working with climate financing mechanisms within Kenya. You have successfully collaborated with national and county government bodies on climate finance matters and possess strong knowledge of Kenya's climate policies, institutional frameworks, and available financing mechanisms. Skills and Attributes You excel in climate change analysis, policy development, and project management. You manage resources effectively, engage diverse stakeholders, and communicate clearly and persuasively. You build networks across government, the private sector, and civil society to strengthen institutional cooperation. Preferred Advantages Specialized training or certification in climate finance, green growth, or disaster financing strengthens your candidacy. Experience in other national contexts relevant to climate change and prior collaboration with the National Treasury are valuable assets.
